Derkjan van der Leest completed his Business Administration studies at the Twente University in 1980. After a period with Esso Chemicals, he became advisor at Van Dien & Co (later to become PricewaterhouseCoopers) in 1983. As advisor and later as partner he was involved in various consultancy projects in strategy and organization. After taking his PHD at VU University Amsterdam in 2000, he obtained a part-time appointment at the Ashridge Strategic Management Centre, the research institute of the London business school by the same name.

In 2002, Derkjan started the Strategic Management Centre. He advises listed companies and professional services firms on strategy and organizational design, and does research in this field as well. As Professor of Strategic Management he is associated with the Postgraduate Controller course of VU University Amsterdam. His fields of interest are the realization of strategy, organizational design and synergy.
