’Decisions should always be taken at the intersection of
the best rational solutions and their applicability in reality. Human emotions play an important role: nerve, fear
and work ethics are hard to grasp, but are decisive in achieving success.’
(Derkjan van der Leest, partner)

Strategy centres on People
Strategic questions not only demand an analytically substantive approach, but in particular attention for the role and behaviour of key people in the realization of a strategy. The foundation of SMC’s advice is making the connection between the management of systems and the leadership of people.

High-Quality Sparring Partner
SMC is a small organization in which the partners themselves are the consultants. All are high- quality sparring partners, who are well able to guide individual managers or executive teams to the next level. Instead of (senior) consultants, clients of SMC always have one of the partners at their side. This personal tailored approach enables a high level of discretion in our work.

No Set Methods, but Tailor-Made Solutions
SMC considers every organization, and by extension each issue and each solution, to be unique. SMC does not use set methods or a standard approach, but always delivers tailor-made solutions. The partners intensively discuss the dilemmas a company faces with the executive management. During those discussions, the partners not only act as a sounding board, but also as a knowledge bank, mirror and, if necessary, coach.

There is No ’Best’ Solution
SMC has one important principle: there is no ’best’ solution. Companies aren’t rational entities and their issues are rarely simple or straightforward. Clearly, the optimum solution is not always at hand. In its recommendations, SMC carefully weighs the alternatives. Quite often, the apparently best solution is not the best choice.

Focus on Process and People
The SMC partners consider process as much as content. Essentially, they consider every issue to be a managerial issue with a human aspect. Quite often when something goes wrong, people are involved and change will have to start with them. Having the ’technical solution’ is only the beginning. Because senior management’s behaviour greatly impacts the running of a company, our recommendations also target the decision process and the behaviour of the executive management itself.

Multidisciplinary Approach
The strength of all of SMC’s partners is that, based on their vast experience and their up-to-date expertise, they can truthfully claim to be able to look at problems from multiple angles.
